This is a love story during the harsh trials of WWII. It is the story of a very young Midwest American man who enlisted, with enthusiasm, like many others, to serve his country. After brief but adequate training, these young men were given their wings to fly in often very dangerous conditions. Though others have told of these times, this story is told through real life letters from a 19-20 year old man, to a childhood “girl” friend. The young girl’s letters are not known to the reader but her feistiness, intelligence, and independence are reflected in this young man’s responses to her letters, letters that sustained him through the war and led to a lifelong marriage. These are real letters collected by the young airman’s son that tell of this time in history, the challenges these brave young men faced, and the importance of letters from home, a real love story. Read it. You will learn about the pilots who flew “the hump”, and be entertained with the innocent flirting of young love and times gone by.

Yes there was a time before cellphones, the internet, texting, zoom, and all the other means of instant and constant communication. And when even a telephone call was impossible and people actually had to write out a letter, put it into an envelope with a stamp on it, and send it off knowing it would take weeks to get a reply. This is the story of how one American pilot had to do to maintain a relationship with the woman he would eventually marry. It is moving and very helpfully annotated by his son in order to provide context. His mother kept the letters she received and passed them to him making the book possible. Those of us who had parents who were in a similar situation during WWII wish we had been so lucky and think back to all the conversations we didn't have with them that we should have had. A very worthwhile read.
J.R. Seeger
In this small book, Eric has captured the lives of a generation of men and women who served during WWII. It is a story of two Midwesterners who faced a world transformed by war. This is not a story of “derring do” though there is no doubt that Eric’s father had his fill of adventures. Rather, it is a story of love letters sent from the front. Those letters capture the essence of combat life lived as a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine.
This is a keeper!
